Shutterfly Photobook Giveaway!

After almost 16 years of marriage, kids, and travel I have collected an extensive amount of photos from our old non-digital-camera-days.  Boxes of pictures exist amongst clothes, shoes, and cat hiding places in my closet.   Some of those pix have been scanned, but you know how that goes.  I would need a few months, non-stop, to go through them all!  No, really…I would.  Show me something colorful or ancestral and you’ve lost me.  Just call me distracted.
My daughter, Catz, is just like me.  She loves anything related to our family tree.  Therefore, she and I are always the ones going through photos.  With all the help, why haven’t I finished?  Well, we just don’t get very far. Here’s a little example of a recent scanning session, just me and her…

Me: (with all seriousness and such) Okay, let’s try to get through this box in less than an hour. (looking through photos…sidetracked!) Oh, look at this…it’s you and Pink Dolly when you were a year old!

Catz: (smiling and looking at photo) Yeah, I remember her.  I took her everywhere.

Me: You were so cute! (fawning over picture)

Catz: Hello, I’m still cute. (still smiling but cocking an eyebrow)

Me: Yes, you are!  (still looking at first photo with a dreamy look)

Catz: (picking up the next two pictures and opening the scanner) Okay, how ’bout I put the pictures in the scanner and you type in the notes…

Me: (laughing while gently taking photos from her hand) Wait, I just want to look at them for a minute.

Catz: (reaching to get photos back and laughing as I hold them out of reach) Uh, Mommy? Your version of “minute” is waay longer than mine.  And didn’t you say we could watch “Emma” if we finished this box by 2:00?  It’s the BBC version, y’know.

Me: Oh, right!  Okay, here. (handing her the photos)

Catz: (about to place photos in scanner…sidetracked!) Oh my goodness, I remember that dress!  But where was this taken?  And who is that standing over there? And…

And that, my friends, is how it goes around here.  I get distracted, Catz gets distracted, and before you know it we’ve touched almost every photo in the box. But few have been scanned.  And we are so exhausted from our trip down memory lane that it’s all we can do to collapse in front of the tv with a Jane Austen dvd.  BBC version, thankyouverymuch.

So the welcome addition years ago of a digital camera and an external hard drive {TechDaddy is a genius} has made for fast photo saving and using.  I may never make time for elaborate scrapbooking because, let’s face it, I’m too easily squirreled by shiny things.  But I have discovered how to share my family’s photos in a beautiful, fun, and super-easy way through photobooks.

Shutterfly was my first foray into photobooks when I made two different books last Christmas, one each for my mom and my mom-in-love.  The process could not have been simpler with easy uploading of pictures and tons of page backgrounds and layouts.  I loved it, and more importantly, both moms loved their photobooks!

And there are sooo many different ways to use photobooks.  Catz recently made one all about our visits to Disney World last year.  Do you see it in the photo up top? It’s gorgeous!  She and I are going to make a baking photobook for Christmas and I’ll be making a recipe book for her hope chest.  And as soon as I get more photos of our Compassion kids, I’ll be putting together a photobook of them.

Right now Shutterfly is offering 20% off their photobooks.  But I have an even sweeter deal…

Shutterfly is letting me offer five, 8 x 8, hard cover photobooks to friends…for FREE!  That’s a $29.99 value for FREE!  Would you like one?  A few restrictions apply, so let me tell you the scoop.  To be eligible for this giveaway you need to be a new photobook user with Shutterfly. {If you’re brand new OR if you’ve already used Shutterfly for other products that’s fine.} The winners will also be responsible for taxes and shipping on their photobooks.

So here’s how to enter. You can get a maximum of three entries:
1. Leave me a comment saying what kind of photobook you’d like to make.
2. Tweet about this giveaway and then let me know in a separate comment box with your twitter handle.  Here’s an example: Stop by @LilbearMe to win a free @Shutterfly #photobook http://bit.ly/eoQ5fe
3. Become a Follower of my blog {in the footer} and leave a comment letting me know.  If you’re already a Follower {You rock!} just let me know in the comments.

If you make all three entries be sure to leave three separate comments.  Deadline to enter is March 22nd, 2011 at 11:59pm EST {that’s Florida-time, folks}. The winners will be announced Wednesday, March 23rd.  Hope you win!

Disclosure: I was given the opportunity by Shutterfly to share 5 free photobooks with 5 friends. I am not receiving any payment, though Shutterfly did offer me free shipping on my next photobook {full price for me}.  The opinions in this post are all my own.

Rough Edges Needed

Overheard this conversation just before Catz & MrC were about to drink some soda…

MrC: Catz, I need to teach you how to burp.
Catz: Uh, no thanks.
MrC: But you need to have some rough edges. You don’t have any.
Catz: I don’t want to learn how to burp.
MrC: You especially need to know how to burp around your husband. Men like that.
Catz: What?! So you’re saying that when you get married you want to marry a girl who burps.
MrC: Look at Mommy…she’s got rough edges.
Catz: She doesn’t burp either.
**Daddy walks in the room**
MrC: Daddy, do you like it when Mommy burps?
Daddy: Yea…it’s kinda cute. Not ladylike, but cute.
Catz: Uhh!! Can we smack them?!?

***For the record…no, of course I don’t burp!! The males in my family must have me confused with some other female. Who, apparently, burps! ;) ***

Get Your Verse On!

Recently I was blessed to learn about Wild Olive Tees, a company that specializes in Christian t-shirts for women.  These shirts differ from most tees since they are made to fit many different women’s sizes and have beautiful colors and designs.  They have both fitted and classic styles so you’re bound to find something you like.  There are so many choices, ladies!

Tees are pretty important to me since they pretty much make up most of my wardrobe.  If you ever catch a glimpse of me out in public {or at home} you’re more than likely to see me in a cute t-shirt and skirt combo.  Add to that some darling hoop earrings and sandals and that’s me…though my fashion consultant {Catz} would love for me to add boots to that repertoire.

So deciding to order from Wild Olive Tees was a no-brainer.  After narrowing down our list, Catz and I chose 3 tees and placed our order.

Within days we received our tees and couldn’t be happier! Catz chose ‘Beloved’ and ‘Beauty from Ashes’ while I fell in love with ‘Redeemed’.  They are awesome!  Catz looks lovely in both shirts which are a beautiful cut and fit for both teens and ladies.  And the fabric is so comfy even in this sweltering Florida summer.

Here’s a pic of me to the left.  I just adore the slight scoop neckline on my shirt, the color, and the fit!  I’m so thrilled with their shirts that I’m planning to order more!  {Just ignore me squinting in the afternoon sun…gee, I really need to learn Photoshop.}

The gals behind the company defintely have their hearts in the right place.  According to their website, ”Wild Olive donates 10% of the profits from sales of its products to Christian-based charities and non-profit organizations.” They also try to help families fundraise for upcoming adoptions.  I love that.

Doesn’t all that just make you want to get a tee? I do! So just click on Wild Olive Tees to check them out…and get your verse on!

Praying for Snow

I know, I know.  Just yesterday I was lauding the fact that here, in Florida, we have been without snow while almost the rest of the nation has been inundated with the stuff.

I have always been content that Florida has remained as God has intended this state to be. Snow-free.

So it might be a surprise to anyone reading this that I now want snow.  Here.  At my house.

{{A surprise to everyone but you, Honey, since you know how often I change my mind. Wink, wink.}}

In fact, I’m so eagar for snow that I’m praying for it.  This is a surprise to me since snow has never been on my prayer list or shown up in my prayer journal.  Not once.

But as the local weather forecasters have been dangling the idea of snow over my head for a few days now, I am very hopeful — prayerful — that the frozen precipitation will actually arrive at my house this weekend.

Notice that I said “arrive at my house“.  I know full well that any snowflakes in these-here-parts will melt as soon as they hit the ground, if not sooner. C’mon, I was born but not yesterday.

I also have previous experience with Florisnow — my own favorite new label for silly snowflakes that try to fall in the Sunshine state.  When I was a little cutie all of 8-years-old and living in South Florida, we were surprised with a mere shimmering of Florida snow in January.

I was home with the chicken pox and my mom called me to come outside.  As my dad was getting ready to leave for work, we caught sight of little Flori-flakes {hee hee} melting as they landed on his coat.  It was neato!  I’ll never forget that moment.

And so I’d love to share a moment like that with my chicklets and hubby.  We’ll see what God has planned.  Nothing is impossible with Him.  Even snow in Florida.

52 hearts: How someone connected with my family

Today, instead of sharing how I made connections with others, I want to give you a bit of my story and a connection that was made with my family.  Maybe it will inspire you in your walk somehow.

When I gave birth to my first baby over 15 years ago, my parents were ecstatic.  They already had three grandsons from one of my sisters and were overjoyed to have a little girl to dote on again.  Well, two weeks after Catz arrived we learned that my dad had pancreatic cancer.  We knew the prognosis for this specific disease, but we prayed for healing all the same.  A year later, at the age of 60 and on Mother’s Day weekend, my daddy moved to heaven.  We were thankful he knew Jesus and there would be no more suffering for him, but ultimately we were heartbroken.

All I could think about were the missed hugs and fun times my kids would never have since my dad was gone.  My mom more than made up for the hugs and fun, but a grandpa is different and I missed that for the kids.

But eventually my eldest brother-in-law, Roger, took on that role.  Eighteen years older than TechDaddy and me, Roger became a close friend to my husband and sort of a father figure for me.  But what really made an impact was his relationship with my kids, Catz and MrC.

He was their uncle, but Roger became like the grandfather they never knew.  Though he lived over an hour away, Roger would sometimes stop by our house out of the blue.  To deliver a birthday gift or just to say hi, he really made a difference.  But in the fall of 2008, at the age of 58, Roger went home to be with God after a massive heart attack.  This time all four of us were devastated.  We all felt his loss deeply and still do.

Last year I had often prayed that God would provide a man to fill that gap with my kids.  Not someone who would be exactly like my dad or my brother, but a man who could share a little bit of that grandfather-like wisdom with them.  I stopped praying for that, deciding that God would grow my kids the way He intends, that we didn’t need someone like that.

And then we met Ray.  This past February our church started a food pantry to help supply the needs of several large food banks in the area.  My kids and I joined the ministry and met Ray, the leader.  Over the next couple of weeks we got to know Ray as we stocked food items at the church.  He and his wife are the sweetest people!  As retired parents and grandparents with family living nearby, they already had their hands pretty full.

But knowing a little of our story, and that my kids don’t have a grandpa, Ray made a huge gesture one day in an email: he wanted to become the honorary grandfather to Catz and MrC.  Wow.  I was stunned but in a good way.  After talking it over with TechDaddy, and making it clear to Ray that we had no expectations, we happily accepted.

Since then we have felt so blessed.  Ray has sent birthday cards with a cool button to each of the kids as well as Easter cards.  When he sees them after church he gives them each a peppermint {my grandpa used to give me mints, too}.  And every time Ray’s around he gives them a hug and tells them that he loves them.  Gee, makes me misty-eyed just remembering.

Isn’t that so cool?  You see, connections can be made in any number of ways.  What ways has someone connected with you that made a positive impact on your life?  What connections have you made?

Relevant – The Plan

Have you ever wanted something so much, but then you couldn’t have it?  In 2010, I planned for it but didn’t get to go to the Relevant Conference in Harrisburg, PA, partly due to health reasons.  Not going was a complete bummer but ended up being okay with me as I knew it was part of God’s timing for me to wait and heal. {Which I did, thank you Jesus!}  Waiting can be a drag sometimes but so worth it in the end, especially when good things follow close behind.  Like the Relevant ’11 Conference.
This year Relevant’11 is already on my horizon.  Even though my inner ear is better, I still cannot fly so I’ll be driving.  But I won’t be going alone…my daughter, Catz, is coming along!  We already have our tickets to the conference and now we have lots of planning ahead for sponsors, blogging, and traveling there and back.
So why am I bringing my daughter?  Well, for two reasons: first, she fits the description of who this conference is meant for, a “blogging Christian woman,” quite well and is possibly the youngest one who will be attending…who can type. {grin} Going to the conference will give her the golden opportunity to meet and hear from other women about how they juggle blogging, raising a family, and serving Jesus Christ.  What a benefit this will be for her now before life gets busier.  She’ll also get to make connections with those women who focus on niches she loves {handmade, photography} to give her an idea on how to best handle her future Etsy shop.
And the other reason?  Catz is a lot of fun!  The relationship she and I share has developed because of intentional parenting.  I know, the word “intentional” has been hugely popular over the past few years, but I’m not jumping on any pop-culture bandwagon here.  Being deliberate as a mom has made a vast difference in my family, and this trip is one way for Catz and I to celebrate that mother-daughter bond.  And are we excited!!
So far our brainstorming sessions have made for great ideas and awesome snack opportunities.  {Psst! Cue the dancing cupcake.} While we munched on these incredible chocolate bits of heaven, my girl and I came up with an enormous list of projects we’d like to do in prep for our trip.  Here’s a handful:
  • sew some necessary accessories {makeup bags, iPad case, iPhone pouches, giveaway bags, pj’s}
  • have stationary goods made {business cards, labels, etc.}
  • plan out roadtrip visits on our drive from Orlando to Harrisburg and back {burger shacks, bakeries, fun family spots, Chik-Fil-A, Cracker Barrel, Washington D.C., etc.)
  • plan suggest someone else plan a get-together with any early arrivals at the hotel {Something chocolate related sounds fun!}
  • complete redesign of our blogs and move to WordPress {by June 1st, hopefully}
  • find and woo sponsors {C’mon, you know you’re out there!}
  • secure a car for the trip {Ford? Chevy? Any takers?}
  • craft a surprise for each attendee
Yes, we have quite a list here, but there are 23 weeks left before Relevant ’11…and I love a challenge!  But I’d also like to know what my sister-conference-goersare doing to prepare for their trip.  Will you be flying or driving? What are your plans before you leave? Will anyone be traveling with you?  Are you selling any handmade items to raise travel funds? Who are your roomies?  How are you biblically preparing your heart for this event?I can think of a zillion more questions, but what I’d love more is to read what you ladies are up to!  Wouldn’t it be fun to share our plans?  I think so. So starting today and over the next 23 weeks I’ll be hosting a Relevant link-up every Thursday!! {This is not sponsored by the the hosts of the Relevant Conference.} Just attach the url of your Relevant-related post to the linky at the bottom of my post.  You can link up as often or as little as you like.  And please be sure to visit some of the other girls’ links and leave some comment love.

It’s all Relevant – On The Road and In the Car

Do me a favor and picture this for a moment: you’re in your car, family spread out in their own nooks, listening to some tunes on the radio, snacks tucked into a nearby cooler, pillows and other comforts stashed for when needed.  And lying ahead of you is the open road.  Ahh, now this is heaven.
The road is in my blood.  From a young age I learned to enjoy not just the destination at the end of a long trip but to savor the journey that led us there.  The glimpses I caught of trees and farms and big city skyscrapers as we buzzed past town after town all amazed me.  I wondered who lived there and what they were doing that day and could they see me as we sped on to another spot on our map.
The love of a good roadtrip has endured.  Though my family of four has always traveled together, our next excursion will be a special mom-daughter time for Catz and me as we venture to Pennsylvania for the Relevant Conference.
We have two map routes to choose from, of which I’m leaving the final choice up to TechDaddy as he’s the Safety Expert and Chief-Worrier-of-His-Two-Girls.  {Mainly, I trust his judgement.}   Both routes have us traveling through 7-8 states and around 2K miles roundtrip.That’s a lot of hours driving, but we have some of our listening options all planned out:

How do you like our selections?  Both series by Chuck Black were wonderful reads for both of my kids {perfect for ages 12 and up}.  We’ve heard all of the Odyssey cd’s so we’re starting from the beginning again and moving forward until they record a new album.  The “Jonathon Park” audio series is also great, but we’ve heard them all recently and not ready to repeat them yet.

And of course, Catz and I will spend a lot of time talking together because that’s what us girls do.  It’s also what keeps our hearts in sync as mother and daughter. And as one of those intentional activities, having our talks is something that I never want to skip.  My relationship with Catz is just too important!

So now it’s your turn.  Have you written a post about your plans for Relevant? Go ahead and link up the url to your post below so we can read more about it.  While you’re at it why not grab a button from my sidebar to put on your blog or in your post.  And be sure to visit someone else who linked up and show some love.  Ready? About Me

Hey there, I’m Susan.  I began this blog in 2008 on a whim and started writing occasional snippets about everyday things.  My favorite posts from back then were those that made my family laugh!

Speaking of my family, those astoundingly awesome people include:

  • TechDaddy, my husband  {I love him so, and not just for his cool ninja computer skills}
  • Catz, my 15 year old daughter  {She’s all wit and style rolled into one beautiful young lady.}
  • MrC, my 13 year old son   {He’s got the tech world covered with his razor-sharp video gaming abilities.}

My family is made up of the three most amazing people on the planet. I adore my husband and kids with every ounce of my being and will go to the ends of the earth for them.  Spending time with my crew is my ultimate relaxation technique.

So, who are you?

In a nutshell, I’m a wife & mom.  Refer to me as “Little Susie Homemaker” or “just a SAHM” and watch my face light up a room.  This is a role I was made for.  That doesn’t mean I skip around with a grin every moment of every day, making cookies and dusting the chandelier.  To be honest, I’m on a first-name basis with all of the dust bunnies and cobwebs hiding out in my home, and I don’t even have a chandelier. Not that I’d dust it if I did.  But I do make cookies, so if we become friends I’ll keep you supplied with some of the best recipes you’ll ever find.

Which leads me to another one of my roles: baker.  In reality, the baking is really a means to an end since I truly love eating the stuff I bake more than the actual baking itself.  I’ve also been known to search out a bakery ahead of time when planning a trip with the family just so I can try out some new muffins and cupcakes.  True story.  It’s then that I whip out my camera to get some shots of our visit {to everyone’s chagrin}.

Because I love photography, too.  And have been accused of being a bit, er, overzealous in my camera snapping.  Being an amateur I use the excuse of “learning” to spend too much time framing a shot or having a family member pose for the same shot four times in a row.  But they love me and ooh and ahh when once in a while I pull something pretty cool out of my Nikon.  Yeah, they’re neat like that.

I also homeschool my kids and have ever since they were tiny.  Not to say that everyone should homeschool because you have to do what works for your own family.  But it works for us and I love it.

But not as much as I love Jesus Christ.  He is my Rock, my Savior, and my all-around go-to Guy.  He rescued me from myself when I was lost and broken and self-destructive, and He continues to rescue me still.  I’m not perfect.  Far from it, in fact.  But His love knows no bounds in pulling me into His warm embrace time after time.  And for this He will always be #1 in my life.

What do you write about?

It depends, but I generally stick to the following:

  • family    {raising teens}
  • baking    {recipes, bakery reviews}
  • homeschooling    {our curriculum, teaching high school}
  • Florida    {fun places like Disney}
  • music     {I love it, I feel it, I crank it up on the headphones. It feeds my soul.}
  • marriage    {making it thrive}
  • faith    {my stumble to the cross}
  • travel    {roadtrips, geocaching}
  • photography    {apps, workshops}
  • mercy & mission work    {Compassion International, Mercy House, Operation Christmas Child}

Where did you come up with the blog name Once Upon a Muffin?

I love how children’s stories often begin with “Once Upon a Time…”  It’s often a precursor to something wonderful and thrilling! It’s a phrase that says “Sit down, get comfy, and prepare for something incredible.”

I love that.  Whether it’s a story or a recipe or a photograph, I want to produce for my family something incredible, that inspires and motivates them to make their own piece of something amazing in this world.

How in the world did you get the nickname Lilbear?

Hmm, that’s a sweet and funny story, actually.  When my oldest child was just a baby, and TechDaddy and I were exhausted from the joys of parenting, we’d lay on the floor of our apartment making a triangle shape with our bodies and the tv stand.  Catz would sit in between us and we three would watch Little Bear on a kids’ cable channel {until we bought every single VHS, and later DVD, of that series}.  As the years went by and Catz grew and MrC came along, Little Bear had become a sweet staple in our family.  So when my hubby one day introduced me to email and the internet, we knew what my handle had to be: Lilbear.

Why do you use fake names for your family? How come I can’t find any pictures of your kids on your blog?

My husband and I want to protect our family, just like any other parent.  One way we feel led to do this is to not use our kids’ real names online.  You will also probably not find a photo of my kids’ faces online.  While we totally respect that parents have a variety of ways to keep their kids protected in regards to internet safety, this is just how we roll right now.

Is there anything else you can tell me about yourself?

Yes, lots!  But I’ll let you learn more about me through my posts.

I’m so glad you stopped by for a visit!  I hope you’ll come back to see me soon.  To make sure you get my most recent sparkling and witty posts, be sure to subscribe here!

Curriculum Spread for 2009-2010

Trying to catch up to Darcy and her awesome Not Back-to-School Blog Hop, here’s my submission for Curriculum week. This year I have both kids in middle school: Catz, my 13yo daughter; and Mr.C, my 11yo son.  Some subjects they do separately, some are done together.

We have a pretty eclectic assortment of stuff. Not that I frown on anyone using a box set for it all. I say do what works for you and your kiddos.  This way just works best for us. Mulling through our choices from last year I was tempted to try something different in some areas… until I saw this year’s test scores. Seems that both kids are doing well in language arts and math, while my son needs something better in reading. So we’re sticking with mostly the same publishers as last year unless otherwise noted. Subjects in blue are done via computer and red are via DVD. So, here goes…

Catz :
* Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1
* Easy Grammar Plus
* Sequential Spelling {if needed}
* Wordly Wise 3000, book 8

This is just the beginning of the year, so we’ll see how much tweaking will be necessary. Have you used any of these programs? Are your kiddos studying the same subjects?  How did you like them?  What are you doing different? Please drop me a line…I lovereading about what works – or doesn’t - with other families. Can’t wait to hear from you!

Giver

Here I sit at the kitchen table watching my son, MrC, finish his dinner. My daughter Catz, sick with a serious head cold, is lying on the couch waiting for him to join her in the family room. TechDaddy, having left the house just minutes before, is on his way to a Financial Peace class at my church.

I was supposed to be with him. By his side, walking hand-in-hand into the classroom, sitting as a couple, driving home together, sharing our day. Instead I am at home, feeling aggravated at everyone including myself. Catz says she feels more comfortable with me at home with her. MrC seems unhelpful and disinterested about keeping his big sister company so I can go out. TechDaddy wants me with him. I feel like I can’t make anyone happy and so I sit watching MrC push peas around his plate and listen to the silence as the tv is paused.

But I’m grumbling. Not out loud, but inside where only God can hear me. And I realize my face is pinched into a look of irritation. This alone could scare away anyone, child or adult. But this is not what I want for my family. I’m supposed to be giving. Of my time, my energy, my self. And I am. But they’re supposed to get the best of me.

However, Paul speaks on this in God’s word. I remember how he speaks on attitude and states it clearly:

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2nd Corinthians 9:7

I know he was speaking about giving tithes, but I think it still pertains to my situation. Giving tithes means we give something that’s valuable to us back to God. If I give the best of myself to my family then aren’t I still giving back to God?

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:7

I let out a deep breath, releasing the tension that had been mounting. Now my whole attitude has changed. I’m happy that Catz is feeling relaxed having me nearby. MrC can watch the movie with his big sis and not feel pressured to be in charge, a role he’s not used to. And TechDaddy…while I miss the time we could be having together, he’ll be home in a couple of hours. I’ll greet him with fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies {his faves}, a few well-placed kisses, and time to spend together. Cheerfully.
