The Move to WordPress

We’re here!! We made it!!  The lights and bells and whistles are on in my new bloggy home, and I’m so thrilled to welcome you!

Last spring, when I began dreaming and planning about hitching a team of horses up to my blog and moving away from blogger, I had no idea it would take. so. long.  Seriously, I thought we’d be all moved and set to go in a few weeks, tops.  But here we are, 6 months later, and I’m thrilled to now be in what I call bloggy heaven…Wordpress.

To be completely transparent, I was the one who held up the move.  My team of horses turned into one stubborn mule {me}. Here I am, married to an amazingly gifted computer guru {seriously y’all, my man rocks}, yet I wanted to “do it myself.”  Yeah, a little bit of pride going on there.  So TechDaddy smiled, said something like “Whatever you want, honey”, and gave me tools and answered my questions and was just plain wonderful.  But life has a way of taking over, especially when you’re blessed with a family, and even more so when your kids are teens whom you’re homeschooling.

So.  Need I say more?  I didn’t get around to finish designing and moving my blog so my man swooped in at the eleventh hour and whipped it into shape.  He’s a keeper, this man of mine.

I’m a recovering perfectionist so during the final tweaks at crazy o’clock in the morning it took every ounce of my being to stop adding and changing and designing.  That’s just my way of saying that the design might be altered a bit over the next month.  Just a bit.

Here is where I was going to put a screen shot of the old blog design {eww} side by side with this new, awesome, spectacular look {yay!}.  But TechDaddy took that shot on his laptop, and he’s on assignment this week, so I’ll add it in later. For now, enjoy the sloping architecture of Morocco

So…what do you think?  Are you thinking of moving to WordPress, or are you already here?

Change

I love change.  {big pause} Okay, that’s not entirely true.

I love change that I:
 (a) know of way in advance,
 (b) am happy about, and
 (c) have some sort of control over.

When it comes to being flexible, I’m not.  I try, oh how I try!  But my mind just gets so wrapped up in what I already know that a sudden change in plans puts my head and heart in a tailspin.  {{Sorry Honey…that’s my high-maintenance quality you’re so used to. Love you!}}

So, knowing my change parameters, it should be no surprise that I revamped my blog a bit.  I wanted to change it, I was happy about the change, and I had complete control over it. Sigh. I really just changed the colors, added a background ala Cutest Blog On The Block, and changed my cute baking gal back to a happy pastel {from the former Christmas motif}.

I am such a visual creature, relying very much on colors and design to set my emotional happy-meter!  It’s been tough for me this last year to want to redesign my blog but not having the know-how in my noggin yet. Hmm, this sounds like a future post.

Anyway, another reason for my bloggy alteration is in honor of Birthday Season!  Yep, it’s a season here at my house.  January is the beginning with mine and Hubby’s birthdays just days apart.  Ahem…and only 1 year difference, thankyouverymuch. {{Learn to count, Sweetie.}}

Next in line of the birthday holidays is Catz’s big day in February.  My sweet girl will be 14 this year. What a lovely young lady. SighAnd finishing the season in March is MrC’s fabuloso day.  Wow, is 12 already here?  He’s growing sooo tall…I’ll be looking up at him soon!

I like my new blog look.  The sweet cupcakes go with my bloggy name very well.  After all, muffins are just an excuse to eat cake for breakfast.

And as for change and being flexible?  I’m working on that.  Oh, and the control thing too.  Good thing this is January…God’s blessed me with room to improve!

About Me

Hey there, I’m Susan.  I began this blog in 2008 on a whim and started writing occasional snippets about everyday things.  My favorite posts from back then were those that made my family laugh!

Speaking of my family, those astoundingly awesome people include:

  • TechDaddy, my husband  {I love him so, and not just for his cool ninja computer skills}
  • Catz, my 15 year old daughter  {She’s all wit and style rolled into one beautiful young lady.}
  • MrC, my 13 year old son   {He’s got the tech world covered with his razor-sharp video gaming abilities.}

My family is made up of the three most amazing people on the planet. I adore my husband and kids with every ounce of my being and will go to the ends of the earth for them.  Spending time with my crew is my ultimate relaxation technique.

So, who are you?

In a nutshell, I’m a wife & mom.  Refer to me as “Little Susie Homemaker” or “just a SAHM” and watch my face light up a room.  This is a role I was made for.  That doesn’t mean I skip around with a grin every moment of every day, making cookies and dusting the chandelier.  To be honest, I’m on a first-name basis with all of the dust bunnies and cobwebs hiding out in my home, and I don’t even have a chandelier. Not that I’d dust it if I did.  But I do make cookies, so if we become friends I’ll keep you supplied with some of the best recipes you’ll ever find.

Which leads me to another one of my roles: baker.  In reality, the baking is really a means to an end since I truly love eating the stuff I bake more than the actual baking itself.  I’ve also been known to search out a bakery ahead of time when planning a trip with the family just so I can try out some new muffins and cupcakes.  True story.  It’s then that I whip out my camera to get some shots of our visit {to everyone’s chagrin}.

Because I love photography, too.  And have been accused of being a bit, er, overzealous in my camera snapping.  Being an amateur I use the excuse of “learning” to spend too much time framing a shot or having a family member pose for the same shot four times in a row.  But they love me and ooh and ahh when once in a while I pull something pretty cool out of my Nikon.  Yeah, they’re neat like that.

I also homeschool my kids and have ever since they were tiny.  Not to say that everyone should homeschool because you have to do what works for your own family.  But it works for us and I love it.

But not as much as I love Jesus Christ.  He is my Rock, my Savior, and my all-around go-to Guy.  He rescued me from myself when I was lost and broken and self-destructive, and He continues to rescue me still.  I’m not perfect.  Far from it, in fact.  But His love knows no bounds in pulling me into His warm embrace time after time.  And for this He will always be #1 in my life.

What do you write about?

It depends, but I generally stick to the following:

  • family    {raising teens}
  • baking    {recipes, bakery reviews}
  • homeschooling    {our curriculum, teaching high school}
  • Florida    {fun places like Disney}
  • music     {I love it, I feel it, I crank it up on the headphones. It feeds my soul.}
  • marriage    {making it thrive}
  • faith    {my stumble to the cross}
  • travel    {roadtrips, geocaching}
  • photography    {apps, workshops}
  • mercy & mission work    {Compassion International, Mercy House, Operation Christmas Child}

Where did you come up with the blog name Once Upon a Muffin?

I love how children’s stories often begin with “Once Upon a Time…”  It’s often a precursor to something wonderful and thrilling! It’s a phrase that says “Sit down, get comfy, and prepare for something incredible.”

I love that.  Whether it’s a story or a recipe or a photograph, I want to produce for my family something incredible, that inspires and motivates them to make their own piece of something amazing in this world.

How in the world did you get the nickname Lilbear?

Hmm, that’s a sweet and funny story, actually.  When my oldest child was just a baby, and TechDaddy and I were exhausted from the joys of parenting, we’d lay on the floor of our apartment making a triangle shape with our bodies and the tv stand.  Catz would sit in between us and we three would watch Little Bear on a kids’ cable channel {until we bought every single VHS, and later DVD, of that series}.  As the years went by and Catz grew and MrC came along, Little Bear had become a sweet staple in our family.  So when my hubby one day introduced me to email and the internet, we knew what my handle had to be: Lilbear.

Why do you use fake names for your family? How come I can’t find any pictures of your kids on your blog?

My husband and I want to protect our family, just like any other parent.  One way we feel led to do this is to not use our kids’ real names online.  You will also probably not find a photo of my kids’ faces online.  While we totally respect that parents have a variety of ways to keep their kids protected in regards to internet safety, this is just how we roll right now.

Is there anything else you can tell me about yourself?

Yes, lots!  But I’ll let you learn more about me through my posts.

I’m so glad you stopped by for a visit!  I hope you’ll come back to see me soon.  To make sure you get my most recent sparkling and witty posts, be sure to subscribe here!

Just trying out…

For months now I’ve been dreaming of a new design for my blog.

This is not it.

But as I was learnin’ me some knowledge this week on digital design I found Blogger’s new ‘design’ tab on my dashboard.  They have 5 {I think?} new templates with at least 3 different styles for each.  They are really cute and just what I needed as an in-between look…until I get myself in gear and design my own blog.

{{Don’t hold your breath, Honey.}}

Praying for Snow

I know, I know.  Just yesterday I was lauding the fact that here, in Florida, we have been without snow while almost the rest of the nation has been inundated with the stuff.

I have always been content that Florida has remained as God has intended this state to be. Snow-free.

So it might be a surprise to anyone reading this that I now want snow.  Here.  At my house.

{{A surprise to everyone but you, Honey, since you know how often I change my mind. Wink, wink.}}

In fact, I’m so eagar for snow that I’m praying for it.  This is a surprise to me since snow has never been on my prayer list or shown up in my prayer journal.  Not once.

But as the local weather forecasters have been dangling the idea of snow over my head for a few days now, I am very hopeful — prayerful — that the frozen precipitation will actually arrive at my house this weekend.

Notice that I said “arrive at my house“.  I know full well that any snowflakes in these-here-parts will melt as soon as they hit the ground, if not sooner. C’mon, I was born but not yesterday.

I also have previous experience with Florisnow — my own favorite new label for silly snowflakes that try to fall in the Sunshine state.  When I was a little cutie all of 8-years-old and living in South Florida, we were surprised with a mere shimmering of Florida snow in January.

I was home with the chicken pox and my mom called me to come outside.  As my dad was getting ready to leave for work, we caught sight of little Flori-flakes {hee hee} melting as they landed on his coat.  It was neato!  I’ll never forget that moment.

And so I’d love to share a moment like that with my chicklets and hubby.  We’ll see what God has planned.  Nothing is impossible with Him.  Even snow in Florida.

Encourage

Happy Thursday!  How has your week been?  Mine has been pretty good so far.  We had a garage sale last Saturday and though we didn’t sell very much we were able to meet some precious people.  Like the three laughing women who spent the longest time looking at everything, calling their friends to see if they wanted “such great stuff”, and saying {rather loudly and for effect} “You have such great prices!”  They were so sweet.
So I have some new stories to tell for 52 hearts today.  One of my connections was with my sister’s step-daughter, which makes her my niece.  I haven’t seen her since Thanksgiving, but she and her sweet kids have been on my heart ever since.  It’s got to be tough being a single mom, but she’s plugging away.  Encouragement is just what she needs.
When I first started going to my current church, I knew no one.  No friend had invited us there, so everyone was a stranger.  But from the start my friend Cheryl and her husband Dale took us under their wings.  It’s been five or so years now that we’ve seen them every Sunday and at church events.  But they’ve decided to move on to where they feel they’re being called.  I understand that desire to listen to what God says, but I miss seeing them every week.  As I have three older sisters, Cheryl’s been like the fourth sister, so I sent her a friendship card.
And to top off my 52 hearts, let me tell you about Linda.  She’s dynamic and gets to a woman’s heart.  I first met her when I began homeschooling 500 10 years ago as she was an experienced mom of 5.  Now, she has 7 grandkids and a hugely popular and successful mentoring program for Christian women.  She was my mentor last year and helped me see my potential as a child of God. I heart her!
Hey, have you heard about the Heart Connection Card Club through Dayspring?  It’s a subscription program, but with greeting cards.  And these aren’t just any greeting cards.  High-quality, premium cards are the only ones in this program.  Some have textures, all have gorgeous color!
To fulfill my desire to touch 52 people means I need a number of greeting cards on hand so I can be ready as God places people on my heart.  This subscription makes it so easy! I love getting an email that doesn’t just inform me of an upcoming order but enables me to change, add to, or cancel an order.  Just the other day I received an email for this month’s card pack.  I rejected the suggested pack but added 4 other packs to my order.  It’s working beautifully! Are you interested in saving money on your greeting cards? Join the Heart Connection Card Club & get a FREE pack of cards & card organizer ($35 value).
Here’s a 52 hearts tip: Along with a greeting card why not send a tote bag? {Some are on sale now for $5.99!}  Or what about mailing one of your “hearts” a journal along with a card?  The possibilities are endless.
So now I want to hear about your 52 hearts connections!  just write a post telling about how you made some connections this week.  It could be through sending cards, bringing someone some cookies, whatever you did to connect and make someone feel special.  It’s simple…just link up your own blog post below and be sure to visit at least one other blogger and leave some comment love.  Remember to link up your specific blog post url so visitors can easily find the correct post.  Thanks for linking up…I’m looking forward to reading about your 52 hearts!

52 hearts: ideas

At the end of last week I received a treat in the mail.  My new card packs from the DaySpring – Card Club {officially known as the Heart Connection Card Club} arrived!  I’m pretty stoked about these cards because I ordered some extra packs {which means I don’t pay shipping, yay!} to fill in with all of the people on my 52 hearts list.  And some of these cards are just so cute.  Check out these from the “Sassy & Sophisticated” line of cards:
And speaking of lists, I have some fresh ideas to share for your 52 hearts lists.  Have you thought of someone new and unique, who you might not normally connect with?  Here are a few of mine: the gal at the post office window; the cashier at the grocery store; and your water delivery guy.  You might be thinking “Wait a minute.  I’m not really ‘friends’ with those people.”  And that’s okay.  Just remember that your 52 hearts don’t have to be relatives and close friends.  They can be folks you may not know that well but you see that they deserve a pat on the back for some reason.  Use your discretion.  Connecting with people can be in your own way, too.  A conversation, a plate of cookies, or sending cards {like me} are just a few ideas.
Here are the reasons behind the latest additions to my list:
  • I go to the post office about once or twice a month now since I mail oversized envelopes of stuff to our sponsored kids through Compassion.  I’ve stood in line and observed the gals working the counter and just realized the other day that they could use some encouragement.
  • At my local grocery store we have cashiers of all ages.  High schoolers, moms, senior ladies…there are many opportunities to connect there.
  •  My family receives a monthly delivery of those huge {and toe-squashingly heavy} 5 gallon water bottles.  Usually, we put the empties out on the porch in the morning and sometime later in the day we see that they’ve been magically replaced with full bottles {ooo, like the tooth fairy}.  The delivery guy could definitely use a word of thanks.
And speaking of guys, the DaySpring – Card Club has other cards for them, too.  Along with my sassy card pack I received a pack just for men titled “Masculine and Business Appropriate.”  That doesn’t sound so cute, right?  Well, they’re not, which is perfect for the men in your life.  Take a look at these:
And remember, if you decide to send greeting cards to your 52 hearts, Dayspring has an awesome program just for you.  Join the Heart Connection Card Club & get a FREE pack of cards & card organizer ($35 value). This means you can sign up for the program and receive your free card pack of 10 premium cards PLUS their cute card organizer all for FREE.  And to be completely transparent here, I get a few pennies as an affiliate when you join. {Thank you!}
So now it’s your turn.  What have you been up to with your 52 hearts?  Just write a post telling about how you made some connections this week.  It could be through sending cards, bringing someone some cookies, whatever you did to connect and make someone feel special.  Maybe you’re a photographer and gave a family a free photo shoot.  Whatever you did, please share it with us.  Next, link up your own blog post below and be sure to visit at least the blogger above your name and leave some comment love.  Remember to link up your specific blog post url so visitors can easily find the correct post.  Thanks for linking up…I’m looking forward to reading about your 52 hearts!

A Day-in-the-Life of Our Homeschool

Here we are taking part in Darcy’s Not Back-to-School Blog Hop with A Day-in-the-Life week. Last year we had a sorta schedule, but we pretty much did what needed doin’ without being rigid. I don’t like rigid too much…it tends to stress me out. Especially if/when something comes up – which it inevitably does – that throws my schedule outta whack.

I like to relax and go with what feels right. “Feel like going for a nature hike instead of handwriting on this beautiful day? Sure, let’s go.” However, I now have two kiddos in middle school with high school looming around the corner {don’t look!}. With that bein’ said, I need to make sure I’m covering all the bases so a schedule is sorta in for this year. Actually, we’re going to use it as a loose base, like a jello framework – semisolid but not too rigid.

My first attempt to capture a snapshot of our day – and put it into words – fell flat. Very funny…but flat. Why? Because I listed what actually happened on that typical day. If I had published that post, I am sure the blog police would have shut down my account for excessive length. If they weren’t already passed out from excessive laughter.

So, in an effort to keep this short & sweet, I’ve summarized what is supposed to happen.  Not hilarious, but pretty accurate.

7:00 – 8:00    Kids wake up and get dressed.  Morning chores.  Breakfast.  Brush teeth.  Fit in a nature walk or fishing if time {Mr.C’s favorite!}.

8:00 – 12:00  Bible, Lang.arts, Math, Music, Art. Alternating between written work and the computer, we cover the following Monday thru Thursday: language arts; math; spanish.  M & W is music appreciation.  T & Th is art appreciation.  Bible is everyday.  Snack/break sometime around 9:30, 10:00.

12:00 – 1:00  Lunch/break.  Nature photo op out back of flowers, birds, etc.{Catz’s favorite!}

1:00 – 2:00   Science.  Using two different curriculums for two different kids.  Challenging.

2:00 – 3:00   History.  Couch time!  Love reading historical fiction together.

So that’s our day in a nutshell.  Do we accomplish this every day?  No.  But the schedule is there to help me get back on track when we go off on a tangent.  However, tangents can be loads of fun, too!  So relax and enjoy the blessing of spending more time with your precious kids.  They’ll learn what they need to know.  And you’ll be blessed beyond measure!

I’m baaack!

I know. To some people there’s no excuse for not blogging. They live for blogging. They’re good at it and that’s great. Their bloggy-beautiful pages give me lots to think about, laugh over, and share with others. But for me, well…I just wasn’t organized enough to blog regularly AND live my life.

I am now, though. And my blog-baby has a whole new look. It’s kind of in limbo as I add and change things. I hope ya like it. Let me know what you think. So anyway, I’m back. ‘Nuf said. See y’all tomorrow!
