Sweet Shot Tuesday: How I Love the Moon

The warmth of the sun feels so good these days.  Although here in Florida the temps are kicked up a notch higher, I still step outside to close my eyes and soak it in.  Even in between intermittent April showers the sun continues to illuminate everything.  On my journey of learning in photography I’ve come to adore this outside light.  I love the way indirect light can give me just what I need to capture a beautiful headshot of my daughter or the perfect bloom of an amaryllis.
On the flip side, night time has a feel all it’s own.  Obviously, the darkness has something to do with it.  But add in the light of the moon and you have a moody quality that explodes with adventure.  Last October I had the amazing opportunity to revel after dark when I took Kent Weakley’s Night Photography eClass.  Besides the fact that Kent is an incredible photographer, he’s also a gifted teacher combining art and science to make difficult concepts completely understandable.  His videos and illustrations added in with meaty text made this visual learner happy and excited to learn.
One of my many favorite topics of Kent’s eClass was how to shoot the moon.  Although I have lots more practicing to go, here’s one of my recent shots.
Would you like to learn how to shoot the moon, too?  Then sign up for Kent Weakley’s Night Photography eClass.  You’ll love it!!  And for more of Darcy’s Sweet Shot Tuesday, click on the super cool coffee cup!

Praying for Snow

I know, I know.  Just yesterday I was lauding the fact that here, in Florida, we have been without snow while almost the rest of the nation has been inundated with the stuff.

I have always been content that Florida has remained as God has intended this state to be. Snow-free.

So it might be a surprise to anyone reading this that I now want snow.  Here.  At my house.

{{A surprise to everyone but you, Honey, since you know how often I change my mind. Wink, wink.}}

In fact, I’m so eagar for snow that I’m praying for it.  This is a surprise to me since snow has never been on my prayer list or shown up in my prayer journal.  Not once.

But as the local weather forecasters have been dangling the idea of snow over my head for a few days now, I am very hopeful — prayerful — that the frozen precipitation will actually arrive at my house this weekend.

Notice that I said “arrive at my house“.  I know full well that any snowflakes in these-here-parts will melt as soon as they hit the ground, if not sooner. C’mon, I was born but not yesterday.

I also have previous experience with Florisnow — my own favorite new label for silly snowflakes that try to fall in the Sunshine state.  When I was a little cutie all of 8-years-old and living in South Florida, we were surprised with a mere shimmering of Florida snow in January.

I was home with the chicken pox and my mom called me to come outside.  As my dad was getting ready to leave for work, we caught sight of little Flori-flakes {hee hee} melting as they landed on his coat.  It was neato!  I’ll never forget that moment.

And so I’d love to share a moment like that with my chicklets and hubby.  We’ll see what God has planned.  Nothing is impossible with Him.  Even snow in Florida.

Relevant – The Plan

Have you ever wanted something so much, but then you couldn’t have it?  In 2010, I planned for it but didn’t get to go to the Relevant Conference in Harrisburg, PA, partly due to health reasons.  Not going was a complete bummer but ended up being okay with me as I knew it was part of God’s timing for me to wait and heal. {Which I did, thank you Jesus!}  Waiting can be a drag sometimes but so worth it in the end, especially when good things follow close behind.  Like the Relevant ’11 Conference.
This year Relevant’11 is already on my horizon.  Even though my inner ear is better, I still cannot fly so I’ll be driving.  But I won’t be going alone…my daughter, Catz, is coming along!  We already have our tickets to the conference and now we have lots of planning ahead for sponsors, blogging, and traveling there and back.
So why am I bringing my daughter?  Well, for two reasons: first, she fits the description of who this conference is meant for, a “blogging Christian woman,” quite well and is possibly the youngest one who will be attending…who can type. {grin} Going to the conference will give her the golden opportunity to meet and hear from other women about how they juggle blogging, raising a family, and serving Jesus Christ.  What a benefit this will be for her now before life gets busier.  She’ll also get to make connections with those women who focus on niches she loves {handmade, photography} to give her an idea on how to best handle her future Etsy shop.
And the other reason?  Catz is a lot of fun!  The relationship she and I share has developed because of intentional parenting.  I know, the word “intentional” has been hugely popular over the past few years, but I’m not jumping on any pop-culture bandwagon here.  Being deliberate as a mom has made a vast difference in my family, and this trip is one way for Catz and I to celebrate that mother-daughter bond.  And are we excited!!
So far our brainstorming sessions have made for great ideas and awesome snack opportunities.  {Psst! Cue the dancing cupcake.} While we munched on these incredible chocolate bits of heaven, my girl and I came up with an enormous list of projects we’d like to do in prep for our trip.  Here’s a handful:
  • sew some necessary accessories {makeup bags, iPad case, iPhone pouches, giveaway bags, pj’s}
  • have stationary goods made {business cards, labels, etc.}
  • plan out roadtrip visits on our drive from Orlando to Harrisburg and back {burger shacks, bakeries, fun family spots, Chik-Fil-A, Cracker Barrel, Washington D.C., etc.)
  • plan suggest someone else plan a get-together with any early arrivals at the hotel {Something chocolate related sounds fun!}
  • complete redesign of our blogs and move to WordPress {by June 1st, hopefully}
  • find and woo sponsors {C’mon, you know you’re out there!}
  • secure a car for the trip {Ford? Chevy? Any takers?}
  • craft a surprise for each attendee
Yes, we have quite a list here, but there are 23 weeks left before Relevant ’11…and I love a challenge!  But I’d also like to know what my sister-conference-goersare doing to prepare for their trip.  Will you be flying or driving? What are your plans before you leave? Will anyone be traveling with you?  Are you selling any handmade items to raise travel funds? Who are your roomies?  How are you biblically preparing your heart for this event?I can think of a zillion more questions, but what I’d love more is to read what you ladies are up to!  Wouldn’t it be fun to share our plans?  I think so. So starting today and over the next 23 weeks I’ll be hosting a Relevant link-up every Thursday!! {This is not sponsored by the the hosts of the Relevant Conference.} Just attach the url of your Relevant-related post to the linky at the bottom of my post.  You can link up as often or as little as you like.  And please be sure to visit some of the other girls’ links and leave some comment love.

Homeschool: The Transitional Year

Another homeschooling year has started and already this year is looking different even though we haven’t added in all of our subjects.  After taking off completely for 3 weeks, we began the new year on July 11th nice and slow.  A couple of subjects to start with {math and Spanish} got us on the right track, and each week we’ve been adding in 1-2 more.  This year will be one of transition as MrC explores 8th grade, his last year before high school, while his sister, Catz, continues on in 10th grade with a tougher schedule.  Balancing the two will be a feat.

8th Grade

In my book, this is the year of more independence in school for MrC to prepare for the rigors of high school.  It’s not that the upper grades are impossibly difficult; they are just more demanding.

* math ->  Pre-Algebra & Algebra 1  {TeachingTextbooks} He’ll be finishing up pre-algebra and starting algebra 1 partway through the year.
* foreign language  ->  Spanish 2- Latin America  {RosettaStone}
* grammar review  ->  Daily Grams 8   {EasyGrammar}
* vocabulary ->  Wordly Wise 3000 – Book 8{EPS}
* science  ->  Exploring Creation with Physical Science   {Apologia}
* geography  ->  Trail Guide to US Geography   {GeographyMatters}
* spelling  -> 500 commonly misspelled wordlist{Sonlight, Core 100}
* writing  ->  Student Writing Intensive B  {IEW}
* history  ->  American History, Core 100  {Sonlight}
* drawing -> Drawing 1a{DonnaYoung.org} basics in drawing
* computers: graphic design -> Adobe Illustrator CS3 Design Essentials, DVD  {Total Training}
* music theory -> Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory  {AlfredPublishing Company}
* music appreciation ->  Music & Moments with the Masters{CornerstoneCurriculum}

10th Grade

Since this is Catz’s second year in high school, I pretty much have a handle on where we should be about now.  The only difference is a heavier load this year than she has had previously.
* math  ->  Geometry  {TeachingTextbooks}
* foreign language  ->  Spanish 2 - Latin America  {RosettaStone}
* science  ->  Exploring Creation with Chemistry   {Apologia}
* geography  ->  Trail Guide to US Geography   {GeographyMatters}
* spelling  ->  500 commonly misspelled wordlist {Sonlight}
* writing  ->  Student Writing Intensive C  {IEW}
* literary analysis  -> TBD
* history  ->  American History, Core 100  {Sonlight} and 20th Century History, Core 300 {Sonlight} We’re going to fit both in this year by eliminating some reading selections I find unnecessary.
* drawing  ->  Draw Today  {Art Skills / Foundations in Art}
* computers: creative photography ->  Adobe Photoshop CS3 Design Essentials, DVD {TotalTraining}
* music theory -> Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory  {AlfredPublishing Company}
* music appreciation ->  Music & Moments with the Masters {CornerstoneCurriculum}
*voice -> private lessons

As with all areas of life, some things may be put on hold for a few months and other items may be added, but this is basically our list for the year.  Are you homeschooling this year?  What subjects are you excited about?  Whatever schooling options you choose for your children, I hope your year is blessed!

Christmas Crafts: Card Hanger

It’s the 3rd day after Thanksgiving, and I’m ready for the glitz of preparing for Christmas!  In my house it’s time for huge, plastic boxes to come out of storage and their contents be put on display. Snowmen and gingerbread boys are placed on the mantle, miniature trees all decked out adorn the bar, and lights and garland get draped above every doorway and window.  As far as senses are concerned, I’m highly visual. So this, my friends, is eye-candy heaven!

As my family works to position yuletide wall hangings and set up train tracks around the tree, the world takes on a different view in my mind.  It’s as though I wear blinders to what could be a stressful time of year.  Along with the lights, color, and twinkle of the season, I choose to see what matters most: people.  The faces of family and friends, their mouths turned up into smiles and laughter, fill my heart with warm fuzzies that seem to stretch all the way to my fingertips!

I long for the welcome sign of the mail truck every day as I wonder who might be sending us a greeting from near or far.  One of my favorite activities leading up to December 25th is displaying Christmas cards we receive.  Setting them on a counter or bookcase just doesn’t do them justice in my opinion, so I hang the cards.  They look so festive that way, don’t you think?

There are a myriad of ways to do this from attaching them onto ribbon to letting each one dangle individually. I found a ton of photos on Pinterest, one of my guilty pleasures and an easy way to lose one’s self online.  The creative ideas I’ve seen there are simply endless!  Here is one of my favorite card hanging suggestions from Dinks:

This is another one of my faves from Tater Tots and Jello.  I think I’ll make this next week with the kids…

How do you display your cards?  Do you hang them up or set them out or mount them in some other way?  Do you put traditional boxed cards in one location and photo cards in another spot?

Speaking of photo cards, have you ordered yours yet? I have yet to order mine. You too?  Well don’t lose heart…there’s still time!  This year I’m falling in love with the photo cards from Tiny Prints. There are so many choices {and I am so very decision-making challenged}, but I think I’ve narrowed it down to a handful.  I love the colors of this one and the many photo window options…

This one looks like a postcard! How cute is that?!

Okay, this photo card is too adorable, already in “ready-to-hang” ornament form. Perfect to hang right on your Christmas tree!

Let’s not forget there’s also an option to design your own card.  Simply select the card color, layout, fonts, and embellishments and you’re good to go!

Right now Tiny Prints is offering 15%-20% off your orders with code CYBER20 until 11/29!!  And even if you order from Tiny Prints after that date {like me, Miss Undecided} you’ll still gain a gorgeous set of Christmas photo cards.

Hey, when you get your photocards, would you please send me a link? I’d love to see them!!

Disclosure: In exchange for this honest review, Tiny Prints has offered to give me my own set of Christmas photo cards.  Their offer does not in any way affect my opinion. {I still think their photo cards rock!} If you’re curious, please feel free to read my full Disclosure Policy here.

Are You Transformed?

I love t-shirts with a good message.  They can be funny. Cute.  Romantic.  Deeply meaningful.  Any way you slice it, t-shirts are like walking billboards.  They convey a lot about the person inside.
Take me for example.  I have tees that express my fondness of baking, my dabbling in photography, and how great I find my husband.  But my faves?  Those would be my shirts from Wild Olive Tees.
I just discovered them last year but they quickly became my go-to source for awesome shirts for women…with a message.  And that message?  That we are precious and loved by our Savior.
Actually, I’m not the only one in my household who adores Wild Olive Tees.  My 15 year old daughter, Catz, is a huge fan as well.  Between us we have 9 of their tees!  I posted about them before and cannot say enough of this amazing company and their beautiful shirts.
The fit and style of each shirt is perfect with a nice long length.  I can sit and bend over without worrying that my shirt will ride up and play peek-a-boo with my back.  The fabric is light yet enduring – perfect in this steamy-hot Florida weather!
And you know what’s the best part of all?  The design and message on each shirt.  With verses from Matthew, Romans, Isaiah, and more AND gorgeous designs I feel blessed and thankful that I get to wear my beliefs like a billboard.
Right now Wild Olive Tees is having a giveaway for their limited-run hoodie, “Transform Your Mind”.  Check out this post for all the details and go enter!
And remember…be transformed!

River Rush

Have you been to Walt Disney World in Orlando?  This is from our very recent visit last weekend at…{can you guess?}…the Magic Kingdom.  I loved the rushing and churning of the water from the giant wheel on this riverboat, the Liberty Belle.  It’s a rather huge boat, but my interest was only in capturing the noise and beauty of the water.  Can’t you just hear it?  I love it!

About Me

Hey there, I’m Susan.  I began this blog in 2008 on a whim and started writing occasional snippets about everyday things.  My favorite posts from back then were those that made my family laugh!

Speaking of my family, those astoundingly awesome people include:

  • TechDaddy, my husband  {I love him so, and not just for his cool ninja computer skills}
  • Catz, my 15 year old daughter  {She’s all wit and style rolled into one beautiful young lady.}
  • MrC, my 13 year old son   {He’s got the tech world covered with his razor-sharp video gaming abilities.}

My family is made up of the three most amazing people on the planet. I adore my husband and kids with every ounce of my being and will go to the ends of the earth for them.  Spending time with my crew is my ultimate relaxation technique.

So, who are you?

In a nutshell, I’m a wife & mom.  Refer to me as “Little Susie Homemaker” or “just a SAHM” and watch my face light up a room.  This is a role I was made for.  That doesn’t mean I skip around with a grin every moment of every day, making cookies and dusting the chandelier.  To be honest, I’m on a first-name basis with all of the dust bunnies and cobwebs hiding out in my home, and I don’t even have a chandelier. Not that I’d dust it if I did.  But I do make cookies, so if we become friends I’ll keep you supplied with some of the best recipes you’ll ever find.

Which leads me to another one of my roles: baker.  In reality, the baking is really a means to an end since I truly love eating the stuff I bake more than the actual baking itself.  I’ve also been known to search out a bakery ahead of time when planning a trip with the family just so I can try out some new muffins and cupcakes.  True story.  It’s then that I whip out my camera to get some shots of our visit {to everyone’s chagrin}.

Because I love photography, too.  And have been accused of being a bit, er, overzealous in my camera snapping.  Being an amateur I use the excuse of “learning” to spend too much time framing a shot or having a family member pose for the same shot four times in a row.  But they love me and ooh and ahh when once in a while I pull something pretty cool out of my Nikon.  Yeah, they’re neat like that.

I also homeschool my kids and have ever since they were tiny.  Not to say that everyone should homeschool because you have to do what works for your own family.  But it works for us and I love it.

But not as much as I love Jesus Christ.  He is my Rock, my Savior, and my all-around go-to Guy.  He rescued me from myself when I was lost and broken and self-destructive, and He continues to rescue me still.  I’m not perfect.  Far from it, in fact.  But His love knows no bounds in pulling me into His warm embrace time after time.  And for this He will always be #1 in my life.

What do you write about?

It depends, but I generally stick to the following:

  • family    {raising teens}
  • baking    {recipes, bakery reviews}
  • homeschooling    {our curriculum, teaching high school}
  • Florida    {fun places like Disney}
  • music     {I love it, I feel it, I crank it up on the headphones. It feeds my soul.}
  • marriage    {making it thrive}
  • faith    {my stumble to the cross}
  • travel    {roadtrips, geocaching}
  • photography    {apps, workshops}
  • mercy & mission work    {Compassion International, Mercy House, Operation Christmas Child}

Where did you come up with the blog name Once Upon a Muffin?

I love how children’s stories often begin with “Once Upon a Time…”  It’s often a precursor to something wonderful and thrilling! It’s a phrase that says “Sit down, get comfy, and prepare for something incredible.”

I love that.  Whether it’s a story or a recipe or a photograph, I want to produce for my family something incredible, that inspires and motivates them to make their own piece of something amazing in this world.

How in the world did you get the nickname Lilbear?

Hmm, that’s a sweet and funny story, actually.  When my oldest child was just a baby, and TechDaddy and I were exhausted from the joys of parenting, we’d lay on the floor of our apartment making a triangle shape with our bodies and the tv stand.  Catz would sit in between us and we three would watch Little Bear on a kids’ cable channel {until we bought every single VHS, and later DVD, of that series}.  As the years went by and Catz grew and MrC came along, Little Bear had become a sweet staple in our family.  So when my hubby one day introduced me to email and the internet, we knew what my handle had to be: Lilbear.

Why do you use fake names for your family? How come I can’t find any pictures of your kids on your blog?

My husband and I want to protect our family, just like any other parent.  One way we feel led to do this is to not use our kids’ real names online.  You will also probably not find a photo of my kids’ faces online.  While we totally respect that parents have a variety of ways to keep their kids protected in regards to internet safety, this is just how we roll right now.

Is there anything else you can tell me about yourself?

Yes, lots!  But I’ll let you learn more about me through my posts.

I’m so glad you stopped by for a visit!  I hope you’ll come back to see me soon.  To make sure you get my most recent sparkling and witty posts, be sure to subscribe here!

Trying to Catch Up…

I haven’t been very consistent in my blogging lately. Okay, truth here…I’ve been way behind. How do you folks keep up with blogging and everything else you try to accomplish every day?? I honestly have a dilemma in this area.

Along with blogging, I need to homeschool my Chicklets, cook dinner every day for my family, spend quality time with each child and Spider X {all separately}, make my house look halfway decent, keep up with bible study, spend time with my Father in prayer, plan our school lessons, and some other stuff that has escaped my already overwhelmed noggin. The part about the house…I gave up cleaning my house daily weekly a long time ago. I feel blessed when I get a few minutes to clean something every few weeks.

Well, I put together a few posts and pics, and I’m catching up on Project 365. If you want to participate, remember to visit Tracy to sign up!

We recently went travelin’ and checked out an rv show while on the road. At the show, we caught this cool sand sculpture of the U.S.A. This shot is of the west side {this thing was huge}. I love the wagon and mount Rushmore.
365/7

Here’s the happy rv family in the center of the sculpture. Hopefully, that’s us in a couple of years. We love to travel by car. And we love to camp. Our experiences have been with a tent {briefly} and then a pop-up. Would love a trailer or 5th-wheel. Of course, a vehicle large enough to pull one of those would be helpful. Do you like to camp?

365/8

Here’s one of our rehab squirrels. The bear destroyed our homemade birdfeeder recently, so we moved this one to the frontyard. It proved to be difficult for this little fatty to maneuver gracefully, though he did do his best to become a trapeze artist. Now that they’re released and living in the trees, we don’t know which one this is, but because all 3 of our squirrels were well-cared for, they are pretty hefty compared to their all-wild counterparts. Hence the term of endearment…”fatty.” By the way, he was hanging onto the other side with his hind paws and swung back up. {No squirrel was harmed in the taking of this photo.}

365/9

Here is another one of our fatty’s. Mr.C had just given him an acorn. I prefer this caption from “E.T.”: “I’ll be right here.”
365/10
Doesn’t she look so cute? This little snuggle-bunny belongs to my daughter, Catz. This shot actually hides the fact that she’s about to take part in the kitty rodeo.
365/11
Hope you enjoyed these shots. Are you a photography buff? Let me know so I can check out your shots, too!
